Healthy Body, Healthy Business: Affects of Sitting for long periods

Question: I've been hearing that sitting for long periods is bad for my health. How could this be effecting me in ways of which I am unaware?

Suggestions:

Chiropractic

Sitting to the spine is like sugar to the teeth, there is no other way to say it. In my estimation, sitting is the real plague of the modern era and is responsible for conditions like fatigue, immune system suppression, sexual dysfunction, digestive disorders, scoliosis, obesity, organ dysfunction, difficult births, spine pain and sports injuries caused by a body that is shut down, to name a few. We are the only species on the planet that still educate our youth in the seated position which brings to mind the old Buddhist saying, “Bend the branch, so grows the tree.” In other words, spending hours sitting essentially shuts down your body and causes your spine to shape into postures that are severely detrimental to the health of your body, spine and nervous system. Once again, simple tests at your Chiropractor’s office will determine the overall state of health of your spine and nervous system.

Yours in health.

Craniosacral Therapy

Any job that requires someone sit for long periods of time is a physically demanding job. It really is. My clients that work like this know it to be true and often complain of back pain, especially in their low back. Sitting for long periods of time can be very hard on the spine, especially the sacrum, which is the bone at the very bottom of our spine. This discomfort will often travel up our back, affecting our neck and shoulders.

People that spend their days in a chair would do well to receive regular craniosacral treatments to regain full circulation and range of motion in their spine and to get rid of any pain and tension. Stretching at regular intervals throughout the day and investing in a good chair (or asking your company to do this) can be life savers, but if a fancy chair isn't an option an exercise ball is a great choice, too.

Aromatherapy

There’s no doubt that sitting for long periods of time will cause in the least pain and at the worst injury. That’s why it’s important to integrate the natural world into the office at every possible moment.

Essential oils are a great way to reinvigorate the body after sitting for a while and remind yourself of your connection to the natural world. Having fresh flowers in the office and drinking herbal teas are a great way to do this also.

Essential Oils of Eucalyptus and Peppermint help awaken the body and increase the memory capacity. Eucalyptus is a popular presence in Asia in offices to increase productivity. You may be motivated and reminded to take more breaks as a result of the exercise motivating power of Peppermint. This would create a better balance of sitting and standing throughout the day.

Healthy Body, Healthy Business: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

"I have been experiencing numbness and tingling down my arms into my fingers. It's worse in the morning and becoming more consistent. Any suggestions?"

Recommendations:

Corrective Exercise

From your description it would be a good idea to get evaluated by a Physical Therapist to rule out the chance of there being a disc injury. It is also important to understand that our muscles develop what are called ‘Trigger Points’ from overuse and trauma. The muscles response to a trigger point is to shorten and tighten which can lead to imbalance, pain, injury, and even nerve impingement. In your particular case it is often that the neck muscles become short and tight placing pressure on the nerve plexus feeding into the arm. This nerve impingement can cause the numb sensation you are experiencing. So, first it would be in your best interest to see a Physical Therapist in order to rule out a disc injury and then to order the trigger point self treatment book, which will guide you through the proper technique for dealing with such an issue. It is also likely that there is some level of postural imbalance involved. Often times postural imbalance is the reason nerve impingement occurs so it’s ideal to be involved in a corrective exercise program in order to properly manage these types of issues.

Numbness down the arms, also called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome can be a relatively common issue for anyone exhibiting forward head and rounded shoulder posture, particularly for those who sit for long periods of time behind a desk/computer. Massage can be very effective in opening up the chest a frontal shoulder muscles and releasing trigger points and facial adhesions in the tissue that is blocking nerve intervention. Along with regular stretching and increased water intake, massage is a great way to address this disturbing sensation.

Chiropractic

When one experiences numbness and tingling it essentially means that your nerves are being irritated, compressed or chaffed by some sort of tissue. The tissues involved in aggravating these nerves can be tendons, cartilage, swelling or even bone. Unfortunately this type of symptom is often caused by something that occurs at a place other than the sight of the pain. I realize that what I just wrote may sound strange since for a long time health care providers have limited their search for problems to the involved area. However, in this case the neck region is where all the nerves that control the arms come from; specifically, from the fourth cervical vertebrae to the first thoracic vertebrae. This group of nerves originating from the neck is called the brachial plexus and these nerves control every aspect of what goes on with the arms including movement, immunity, blood supply, energy metabolism and, in your case, sensation. Due to our stressful lifestyles, these nerves can be irritated and damaged by what is known as a Subluxation. A Subluxation is an area of the spine that is not moving well which damages the nerves exiting the spine at that level causing things like pain, poor control of the shoulders and arms and a host of other dysfunctions. Simple tests at your Chiropractors office can determine if you indeed have Subluxations that may be affecting the nerves causing the numbness and tingling. Remember that the body is self healing and self regulating and it is the nervous system - including your brain, spinal cord and all the nerves that travel throughout your body- that controls healing and regulation. Making sure that it is healthy and functioning properly will secure the best possible chance to heal from anything!

Craniosacral Therapy

The relationship between your shoulders, arms, wrists, and neck provides many opportunities for this to occur, especially if the muscles in these areas become tight or inflamed. If this happens, they will in turn constrict the nerves that run beneath these muscles and can cause the tell-tale numbness and tingling. Unfortunately, this is pretty common.

With craniosacral therapy we relax the muscles that are compressing the nerves so they can function properly again. We can also restore proper flow of fluids to these structures. We can even pick up the arm and wrist and skillfully unwind the large bands of tissue that wrap around and within the hand, arm, shoulder, and neck. Opening up these tissues helps to renew sensation throughout the arms and relieve you of your symptoms.

In the 80’s and 90’s it was Carpal Tunnel for Secretaries and Writers. Now the Current similar issue is “Computer Mouse Arm”. When spending 20+ hours at the computer one may notice how they continually holding up your arm. If a muscle is continually flexed for a long time while the user is in a state of stress that motion will become very tight.

“Computer Mouse Arm” will be pain in the top of the forearm, bicep, top of the shoulder, and the area between the spine and upper shoulder. When these muscles get tight they can cut off the nerves to the hands causing tingling in the pinky and ring fingers.

Notice when your are working at your computer and see you are holding your arm up while it is doing no work. Become more conscious of this behavior and practice relaxing your arm while “Mousing”.

Acupuncture/Chinese Medicine

This can be addressed a few different ways with Acupuncture/Chinese Medicine. There are 12 major meridians or pathways of energy that run on both sides of the body. In Five-Element Acupuncture, we need to check if the flow on one side of a meridian is deficient or running in-excess comparatively to the other side. This can create one-sided issues including pain, loss of range-of-motion, numbness/tingling, etc. The diagnosis/treatment of this type of imbalance is fairly simply to explore and remedy. Traditional Chinese Medicine would look at it a little different. This would be diagnosed as Qi and Blood Stagnation in whatever meridian(s) goes through the affected area. Since TCM also takes into account Western science influences, with numbness/tingling we’d want to include treatment of the cervical spine. There are acupuncture points in-between and on either side of each vertebrae called Hua Tuo Jia Ji points that are commonly used for this sort of thing. Effective techniques would include standard acupuncture, electro-acupuncture (specific current through the needles to create physiological change), and cupping in and around the neck, shoulders, and down the affected arm(s). How do I cope with Fibromyalgia, endometriosis etc:

“I have FM, mitral valve prolapse, endometriosis, PTSD, anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia...etc. Where can I find the latest on how to cope?”

Suggestions:

Cranio Sacral therapy

When someone has several things they need to manage with their health, I tend to think that a gentle, but comprehensive approach, is a good way to offer overall support. You want to find some relief from your pain and stress without aggravating any of your current symptoms or causing more imbalance. Many forms of touch therapy, such as craniosacral therapy, can be very beneficial for this.

With craniosacral therapy we can help relieve the nervous system of some of the chaos it's experiencing, soothe the stress response, and decrease the general levels of inflammation in the body which are contributing to many of the challenges you are dealing with. Pair it with daily practice of relaxing breathing exercises and you can go far in feeling better.

Thank you so much for asking this question as it opens the door to address some very important issues involving the health of your body and, might I add, the health of your mind. First, I would like to address an interesting point about how you asked your question. Why do you feel that all you can do at this stage is just to cope? My first suggestion would be to watch the movie “The Secret” which will help you to absorb the concept of “where your mind goes your body will follow.”
Secondly, all of the things that you mentioned in your question are not diseases, they are signs; signs that your mind, body and spirit are in a state of crisis. My first instinct is to say that your body is in a chronic state of inflammation and that your blood is moving towards acidity and away from alkalinity. Our esteemed Naturopath can help you there. Then, as a Chiropractor, I am naturally inquisitive as to the state of health of your nervous system. Blood acidity causes an in-efficient and agitated nervous system. The nervous system is the master system of the body and controls healing. It is important that this system remain healthy in order to start the task of balancing and healing your body.

Yours in health.

Naturopathic Medicine

It is my professional opinion that you should not be trying to “fix” your health concerns by yourself. There are many issues to consider in your case and try to do it alone may make matters worse and complicate the whole picture. I would also advise to keep in mind that there is a difference between your question on “coping” versus the larger question at hand, “healing”. The allopathic MD answer is on how to cope, where the Naturopathic philosophy is to never underestimate the healing potential of your vital force.
Whenever I see a list of health concerns such as these I take a step back and ask, what do all of these have in common? The nervous system and the muscular system are very susceptible to damage from toxicity. The ayurvedic and naturopathic approach are similar in that they both will strive to decrease the patient’s toxic burden. This is done by eliminating toxic build up in the system (via a detox program) and by eliminating toxic exposure (via diet and lifestyle changes). In addition, your symptoms may also be related to nutritional deficiencies; for example: omega-3 fats; minerals such as zinc, selenium, calcium and magnesium; vitamins C,D,E & Bs. These are just a few examples. Finally, it can never be ignored to do a heavy metal screen. Heavy metal toxicity affects all the organ systems of the body, and as mentioned above, some of the most sensitive systems are the nervous and muscular systems.
I would advise against doing your own detox program without supervision. For example, if you mobilize toxins and your organs of elimination are not able to handle this influx, you may become much more ill and induce more serious symptoms. Again I urge you to seek out a naturopathic doctor to get a sense of what options are available to you.

How do I address knee pain?

Question:

"My Doctor just recommended I get surgery for my ongoing knee pain. Is there any way to avoid this surgery, or at least prepare my body for healing?"

Suggestions:

Acupuncture/Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture is becoming a “go-to” modality when it comes to pain. Whether it’s preparative or rehabilitative in the midst of surgery, or to circumvent surgery all together, the use of acupuncture, electro-stimulation, and herbal liniments can really get stagnated qi and blood moving, as well as restore balance to our system. I’ve seen recovery times cut in half! According to Chinese Medicine, the knees are governed by the Kidney meridian, along with the low-back, bones, urinary, sexual, auditory functions, and the emotion of fear (to name a few). It would be worthwhile to explore these areas, as there might be a larger picture than simply looking at the knee. With that in mind, on a deeper level, as a Five Element acupuncturist, we see the body’s “symptoms” (especially chronic) as a manifestation of an underlying imbalance, usually on the level of mind (emotions) or spirit. Pain above all, is a protective function for us. So I feel it is vital to explore what else has happened and is happening in someone’s life, where else there is stagnation that may be preventing the body from doing what it is meant to naturally...heal itself!

Corrective Exercise

Surgery tends to be a very popular treatment approach amongst most Doctors for dealing with joint pain. Yes, in some cases the severity of the injury or degeneration can be extreme enough that surgery is necessary, but before you take your Doctors word for it there are some very important things to understand.

For instance, the balance and function of the musculoskeletal system is vital to the health of all the joints of the body. Without proper postural alignment of the skeletal system the joints become dysfunctional and subject to pain and or injury. A major determinant of postural alignment and joint function is the length tension relationship between the muscles surrounding the joint. The better balanced these muscles are the more evenly the force of movement is distributed across the joint, eliminating unnecessary ware and tare on the inert structures that make up the joint. It would be in your best interest to work towards this balance before having surgery.

Now, there is still the most important function, from a structural standpoint, to understand when dealing with joint pain and that is that of the abdominal wall. Vital to proper postural alignment and joint function the abdominal wall creates stability within the entire trunk (spine, pelvis and rib cage) giving the knee and all other joints of the leg a solid platform from which to operate. Whether or not surgery is needed, good abdominal coordination must be a goal within the treatment plan or dysfunction and pain will continue to reside within the joint.

Knee pain is an interesting one as it exposes a great opportunity not only to dive into the knee itself but also to address issues regarding how the body works. So, I am going to spend part of my answer to your question talking about how your body works and the other part directly addressing the knee.

The most successful way I know to begin addressing the workings of the body is by using analogies. In this particular analogy your spine represents the foundation of your house while the walls are represented by your legs and arms. If your walls start to crumble, wall paper starts to tear and the paint starts to chip because your foundation is not flat does it make any sense to apply new wall paper, re-paint and re-plaster the walls; of course not? That would be a waste of time, energy and money. Instead, it would make sense to go back to the foundation and level it. Well, the body works in very much the same way. Because your limbs connect to the spine, they are hugely susceptible to how your spine is lined up. As a result, under these circumstances, limb pain is only an effect, while the cause is how your “foundation” is looking and working.

Regarding the knee itself, there two points I would like to make. First, the knee is greatly affected by the functioning of the foot. Any damage, history of ankle sprains or lack of proper functioning of the foot can cause stress on the knee as the forces of gravity work their way up the limbs. Secondly, your knee itself can become misaligned. That’s right, the tibia, or shin bone, can become rotated and thus can put stress on all the muscles, ligaments and tendons of the knee as these tissues try to adapt and accommodate to the misalignment. Whatever the cause of your knee pain, simple tests at your Chiropractor’s office can determine whether Chiropractic can help.

Craniosacral Therapy

Knee pain can very often be reduced by craniosacral therapy, as it increases proper flow of fluids around the joint and eases restrictions in the muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the knee. In treatment, we may even find that your knee pain is due to something unsuspected. Did you know knee pain can be caused by a prolapsed kidney and then relieved by gently working with the position of the kidney? Just one possible option of many, and one that doesn't require going under the knife. But if surgery is inevitable, there are cranial techniques that will ease tension, stress, and congestion in the knee and the nervous system, helping to relax the body before the procedure. Follow up treatments after the surgery will speed healing in the tissues as well.

Feng Shui

The knee and leg are associated with the Career Gua in Feng Shui.

The Career Gua deals with security, foundation, grounding, life path, and life experience. In the Black Hat sect of Feng Shui, the Career Gua is located in the middle of the wall wherever your front door (to your house, or to a room) is located. The best color in that area is black.

Before going into surgery make sure that area of your home/room is clean, organized, and you feel secure (no lingering doubts or questions). Since Career also deals with life experience and life path, take some time to examine how you got to this place in your life, as well as thinking about where you're heading to. The legs help us mobilize physically, but they also represent mobilization metaphorically so if our legs are in good shape, then we can move forward easily.

Becca Campbell

Naturopathic Medicine

There is usually a way to avoid surgery, depending on the cause for the knee pain. One should always seek multiple alternative health providers for a second opinion before surgery is considered for knee pain.

In addition to bodywork, corrective exercise and physical therapy, there are many other factors to consider. Whether it be a naturopathic or ayurvedic philosophy, nutrition and gut health are the foundation for healthy joints. For example, either approach appreciates the importance of healthy fats and oils when dealing with any joint issue. Nutritional deficiencies or food intolerances will also adversely affect joint health. Either approach will use herbal medicines and supplements to treat pain and inflammation as well as to encourage healing to take place.

Naturopathic medicine also includes physical methods of healing such as ultrasound, short-wave diathermy, cold laser, contrast hydrotherapy and poultices to just name a few. Ayurveda has its own physical methods to also encourage tissue regeneration, i.e. healing without surgery.

I believe most injury pain below the hips are due to the way we walk. Tight muscles in the legs will pull hip, knee, and ankle joints out of place. When bones are pulled out of place the joints don’t have enough room to move thus causing such symptoms as arthritis and excessive joint pain.

Our mind tells our body how to move. If we are depressed you won’t walk upright and will start to lean forward. This will put more weight on your knees as your body has to counter the weight from always leaning forward. Walking upright and having correct posture technique will give your body more strength thus alleviating the stress one will put on there body.

The more you are empowered to watch you own health the less you will need emergency care. See my article on “How to walk consciously and correctly”. http://biznik.com/members/jacob-caldwell-lmp/articles/how-to-walk-without-an-orthodic-crutch

Massage Therapy

There are many avenues you can explore before undergoing invasive surgery. My first response is to get a second opinion. Specifically, seek a physical therapist or more holistic practitioner that can give you in depth information and possibly a variety of well-rounded options. There are unfortunately a lot of physicians that recommend unnecessary surgery. Listen to your instincts and make sure that you feel completely confident in what is being suggested. Ask questions; be informed about your body and what exactly is happening in the structures.

If it is indeed determined that surgery is appropriate for your condition, there are many facets of massage therapy that can aid with both the preparation and the healing of the structures involved. Depending on the current start of your knee, trigger point release, lymphatic drainage and basic Swedish techniques can help restore tissue health and increase circulation in preparation for the trauma of surgery.

During the acute stage of healing, contrast hydrotherapy, lymphatic drainage massage, some passive range of motion and muscle energy techniques can continue to improve range of motion and functionality of the joint. And in the final stages of healing, cross fiber friction on the incision will help to break up scar tissue and renew the best health possible in the area.

Spring Detox

Question: "I've been hearing the spring is a good season to detoxify. Can you recommend a complementary program for "spring cleaning" my body?"

Suggestions:

Corrective Exercise

Taking part in a detox program is a very important thing to do since we are exposed to many different toxins on a daily basis. The confusing part is that there are so many different types of detox programs out there and it’s hard to know which one is the best for you. This is why it’s necessary to seek professional guidance from a Naturopath or Nutritionist in order to choose the right program and complete it safely and effectively.

When detoxifying the body it’s essential to drink plenty of clean, filtered water, eat right for your body- knowing your metabolic type, and exercise. Exercise is one of the most effective ways to rid the body of toxins because it causes an increase in respiratory rate and it makes you sweat. With balanced exercise the body will release toxins through the sweat glands and rid itself of metabolic waste due to an increase in oxygen exchange. It is important however that the right intensity is applied during a detox program. It must be understood that exercise is a stress to the body and too much stress creates diminishing returns. The right amount of exercise is dependent on what detox program your health care provider recommends.

It is extremely beneficial to treat the skin and internal organs with Essential Oils for detoxification in the Spring. During a Detox, take a nightly bath with essential oils of: Grapefruit Citrus x paradisi (5 Drops), Fennel Foeniculum vulgare var. dulce (4 drops), Frankincense Boswellia carteri (4 drops) and Juniper* Juniperus communis(10 drops) per 1 cup of Dead Sea Salts or Epsom Salts. You may enjoy accompanying your Detox with a biweekly massage. Take these oils to your regular massage therapist or massage partner: Laurel* Laurus nobilis (5 drops), Juniper* (10 drops), Cypress Cupressus sempervirens (6 drops) and Lemon Citrus limon (4 drops) in 1 oz. of Organic Jojoba or Sunflower Oil. (*Exclude Juniper and Laurel from these recipes if you are pregnant).

By getting rid of old anger and starting fresh, you are giving yourself the gift of Emotional Detox. Just before leaving your home for the day, meditate for 10 minutes using essential oils. To do this, sit for 10 minutes and repeat a meaningful phrase demanding the exit of negative energy with the following essential oils on the soles of your feet: Geranium Pelargonium graveolens, Rosemary ct. verbenone Rosmarinus officinalis ct. verbenone, German Matricaria recutita & Roman chamomile Chamaemelum nobile, Fennel, Carrot Seed Daucus carota, Helichrysum Helichrysum italicum and Blue Tansy Tanacetum annuum. Some of these oils are quite pricey, but you can pick and choose as these are all effective. And, refer to your Aromatherapist for purchasing and customization questions.

Cranio Sacral

Spring is a very natural time for the body to go into a process of shedding and cleansing, so I like to keep it simple with “spring cleaning”. Focus on nourishing yourself with whole foods, pure water, fresh air, and time for relaxation. Simply relieving your body of the burden of some of the habits we become accustomed to, such as poor food choices, high stress, and shallow breathing, can go a long way in helping to cleanse the body.

Craniosacral treatments help renew the fluid systems in the body and allow people to feel greater mental clarity as well as profound relaxation. People receiving this work during “spring cleaning” find it becomes much easier to create new habits for Spring and make healthy choices.

Ionic Foot Bath - The Ionic Foot Bath is a great detoxing machine which helps with extracting inorganic items in the body. The body has a hard time getting rid of these substances itself, so in this extreme time of environmental toxins, its takes an extreme machine.

The Ionic Foot Bath takes out: Metal, Tobacco, Chemicals, Smog/Pollution, Yeast from Sugar, Mold, Viruses. Can help with: Weight Loss – Inability to Release toxins, Increase in immunity - more function back to the organ, Sore Joint Relief due to debris in joint capsules, Allergy relief, overloaded Liver and Kidney. After a 30 minute treatment you will not be able to see your feet due to the amount of toxins in the water.

If you have any type of metal from traumatic injuries, such as plates, rods, or screws the Ionic Foot Bath is essential for the removal or metal from the body. It will increase circulation and take away the pain; the pain is the leaching of metal into the body.

Acupuncture

Yes, Spring is a great time to cleanse. From the Five Element Acupuncture perspective, it is the time of the Wood Element and the meridians of our Liver and Gallbladder. These meridians are not only greatly in charge of how we detox physiologically, but also how we detox the mind and spirit as well. Detox regimens can really vary. On the extreme end, there is the Master Cleanser, essentially the only nourishment that you take is a lemonade concoction made from lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and water, six to twelve glasses per day for a minimum of 10 days. I don’t recommend this as a first-time cleanse option. On the other end of the spectrum, you can simply take two weeks to eat only organic, whole grain foods, cutting out sugar, minimize meat and dairy, and only drink water or herbal teas. I did a 10-day cleanse last year that is somewhere in the middle.

Day 1 – fruit, raw or cooked vegetables, whole grains, half your body weight in water
Day 2 - fruit, raw or cooked vegetables, half your body weight in water
Day 3 – vegetable or diluted fruit juice, half your body weight in water
Day 4, 5, 6 – 8oz of water per hour
Day 7 – same as Day 3
Day 8 – same as Day 2
Day 9 – same as Day 1
Day 10 – slowly start to incorporate beans and other proteins

Some things to keep in mind with any cleanse:
- getting enough water is REALLY important
- having a lighter schedule from both a work and emotional standpoint would be ideal
- incorporating a fiber supplement can also facilitate the process
- our skin is our largest eliminative organ, so dry skin-brushing is great
- oxidative stress is a huge player in toxins being built up in the body – I carry two products called OPC-3 and ORAC from Nutrametrix which are superior anti-oxidant supplements
- while a controversial topic, many people have found exploring colon-hydrotherapy as a means to detox from many things, including heavy metals – for those here in Seattle, check out the Tummy Temple
- From a Chinese medicine standpoint, the strongest time for our Gallbladder and Liver meridians is from 11pm-3am, so being in bed by 11pm and allowing our body to rest, can really allow these processes to happen in the most efficient ways

Finally, because you are going to also be detoxing the mind and spirit, its good to let people know you are doing a cleanse. Having professional work can also be a very powerful adjunct, either through bodywork (e.g. acupuncture, massage, reiki, etc.) or exploring more mind/spirit related avenues such as going to a meditation center or working with a counselor.

Every moment is a great moment to detoxify. The problem with detox programs is that it promotes a binge/purge philosophy. The whole idea behind wellness and health is consistency. There really is no need to detox if you are living consistently within the laws of normal body function because the body will take care of itself in spite of what you do to it. As an aside, detox programs are in fact very hard on your adrenal glands because the starvation response of the body relies heavily on the functions of the adrenal glands. The challenge with relying on the adrenals in this way is that most people in the western world are in a sub-clinical state of adrenal fatigue anyway due to stress.

Therefore, adding more onto the plate of the adrenal glands is not what I would recommend. Remember that the adrenal glands are the organs that connect the nervous system to the hormone system. In other words, the adrenal glands are told by the nervous system to send out chemical hormones that slowly regulate functions like metabolism and energy levels. So, keeping your adrenal glands healthy and stress free is of paramount importance to the whole system. Instead of undergoing a stressful detox program, start to change your lifestyle habits. Learn to eat, think and move in a way that supports what the body is genetically programmed to do anyway which is to be healthy! Give yourself a year. Start with exercising, a great way to detox, at least thirty minutes every day. This doesn’t mean joining a gym and walking on a treadmill monotonously for hours either. Exercise means moving your body in a vigorous way.

So, get outside and walk, hike, swim, ride or garden. Increase your intake of fluoride and chlorine free water (66% of your body weight in ounces per day). Consume at least 3grams of fish oil per day. Finally, pick yourself up a quality Greens powder. The greens will help to supply the nutrients required by the organs of detoxification (namely the liver, kidneys, spleen, skin and digestive system). Then, when your year is up and you take a moment to reflect back, you will have created permanent habits that will serve you for your entire life and not just the length of your detox program! Remember the old saying, “Catch a fish for someone and he/she can eat for a meal. Teach someone to fish and he/she can eat for a lifetime!”

Yours in health.

Energetically, Spring is a wonderful time for cleansing… out with the old and in with the new, as they say! It’s generally a more active time of year and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables begin to be readily available at your local farmer’s market! From a bodywork perspective, massage and reflexology are fantastic complements to any detoxification program. Massage promotes toxins to be released from the tissues and increases circulation to help move the waste out of the body. Releasing the diaphragm can also encourage deeper and balanced breathing, which is a huge component to an effective detox. In addition, the holistic approach of therapeutic massage can ease some of the side-effects of harsher cleansing, such as headache, fatigue and irritability During a professional reflexology session, specific organs can be addressed to help promote healing and detoxification of the digestive system.

Spring is a great time to detoxify.

1. A good detox program will support all 5 organs of elimination (emunctories): Liver, Bowels, Kidneys, Lungs, Skin and for females, the Uterus is a 6th emunctory.

The program should contain: a simple organic diet free from packaged foods, filtered water that is ½ the person’s weight in ounces or more (150# person = 75 oz water) herbal supplements and essential oils to support the detox pathways in the liver and elimination processes in the other organs.

Physical medicine such as lymphatic massage, chiropractic adjustments, yoga therapy, acupuncture, dry skin brushing, netipot/sinus irrigation, full body oil applications and steams, breath exercises, walks in the fresh air, sleep hygiene etc.

2. Your current state of health should also be considered. Some people should NOT start a detox plan until their state of health is improved in order to handle the circulating toxins mobilized by the detox process. If a person has one or more emunctories not fully functioning they should have a few weeks to a month of “prep” work.

3. It is highly recommended you seek professional support during this important process. Not only will they be able to help assess the current state of your elimination organs but will be able to establish a plan that will be safe and most helpful to you. Please remember, it is normal to feel sick during this process. However, when is too sick unsafe? The professional person (ND, Accupuncturist, Herbalist etc) can assess the level of sickness and offer further support to help you move through the sickness and into a healthier state.

Beginning a Holistic Wellness Program and Staying Motivated

Question: "I seem to have a hard time beginning a wellness program and motivating myself. Are there quick and easy daily tools that I can use to get started?"

Suggestions:

Corrective Exercise

A daily practice of postural awareness and diaphragmatic breathing can establish a strong connection between the mind and body, which can lead to a greater appreciation for the body and as a result greater motivation to care for it. These simple exercises carry with them great health benefits such as improved musculoskeletal balance and decreased pain, increased sleep quality as well as energy level, improved nervous system function including improved digestion and absorption, circulation, and tissue repair just to name a few.

Postural Awareness
This is the practice of ideal posture during daily activities such as sitting at your desk, standing in line at the store, or walking up a flight of stairs. Postural awareness strengthens your proprioceptive sense allowing you to feel your body in space, to accurately identify its size and shape as well as its relationship to the environment.

Ideal posture is defined as the position from which the musculoskeletal system functions most efficiently. The state of ideal posture allows for safer, stronger, more coordinated movement to be performed with the least amount of energy.

To help guide your body into the position of ideal posture first stand relaxed with your feet shoulder width apart. Imagine a large helium balloon attached to the top of your head gently lifting you from the ground. Feel your spine lengthen, your shoulders effortlessly rolling back as your chest lifts. Next, soften the knee joints just enough so that they are not locked out or hyperextended. Now close your eyes and feel your body’s stance, feel the position of every joint. Paint a picture in your mind, with as much detail as possible, of what your body looks like at that moment. This picture, along with the feeling become your reference for returning to ideal posture.

Diaphragmatic breathing
This exercise can be done anywhere at anytime. It will be easier to begin learning this exercise while lying on your back.

Start by interlocking your fingers and placing both hands over your belly button (if you are sitting or standing, practice ideal posture). As you begin to slowly inhale let your abdominal wall expand into your hands pushing them away from the spine - the first 2/3’s of the inhale should come from the abdominal cavity and the last 1/3 of the inhale should come from the chest cavity.

Now as you begin to slowly exhale, gently draw your belly button in bringing your hands towards the spine- this will assist the lungs in expelling the air via intra abdominal pressure. Make sure to avoid over activating the abdominal musculature (the spine should not move).

Count the seconds it takes to fully inhale and then the seconds it takes to fully exhale- working up to 10 seconds each direction.

Focus on the air flowing through your body- working towards a smooth, rolling transition from inhale to exhale.

There is never an easy way to start a new habit. Just start! I’m sorry, but aside from coming over to your house and cracking the whip, which I am willing to do, there is little I can do to motivate you. This has to come from you. I can tell you, however, that when you start to look, feel, and express yourself in an amazing way as a result of your wellness program, the motivation will flow like wine! So just start! The two best ways to get started with a new plan are to start small and to set a time frame. The Buddhist’s have a saying the “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” Starting small accomplishes a couple of things: it gets the ball rolling without adding complications or pressure to your life and it will not put your body into turmoil as it begins to change and grow. Setting a time period of 6months will also help to train your mind to accept a very important concept: there is no process that does not require time. Steve Covey, author of “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” says that it takes 26 consecutive days to start a habit. So, for the first 26 days of your program, just focus on consistency. That is your short term goal. After that, your momentum will carry you through as the habit works its way into your daily life. One more thing, never give yourself a hard time for failing. There are no failures, only successes! Winston Churchill stated that “success is the ability to go from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” So hurry up and fail I say!

Starting a wellness plan successfully:

1. Be specific: A wellness program should contain specific elements, not generals. For example, it is better to say “I will drink 8 glasses of water a day” instead of saying, “I should start drinking more water”. Organizing your life in simple statements of “I will” instead of “I should” will give more motivation and have lasting effects. The statement “I should” does not carry tangible meaning in the brain. If our life is structured as “should” we will create long lists of intangible goals. We will feel unsuccessful and failure is inevitable.

2. Be realistic and start slow: It is better to have a small start and have success than to have an in depth plan that fails after a few months. Outline the major pillars to healthy living giving yourself a large picture of where you would like to be in 6 months-1 year. Pick one new element of wellness to incorporate into your daily life. Keep a chart to keep you accountable. Give yourself a sticker, gold star or checkmark for each day you completed your goal. After 1-2 weeks add a new element but still keep track of the first one. It takes about 30 days to make something a habit. You will be able to see at a glance your ability to be successful: positive reinforcement of healthy habits. It is also great to keep a simple journal that includes the way you are feeling, good or bad. That way as time goes on you can look back and see your progress.

3. Be Accountable to someone: Whether it be your doctor or a friend, have someone you will meet on a regular basis to discuss the headway you have made. This is probably the most important part to being successful with any wellness plan.

Simplicity is key. Choose 1-3 things to adjust within your lifestyle to start. For example, getting the right amount of water per day, which would be a minimum of half your body weight in ounces. Or looking at what time you’re going to bed, are you turning in early enough to allow yourself to wake rested and refreshed? Are you having breakfast on a daily basis? The strongest time for our Stomach meridian is from 7-9am. This meridian is not just in charge of our nourishment on a physiological level, but governs how we are able to process the ways we nourish our mind and spirit as well; our ability to truly care for ourselves and others in a mindful way, while supporting a mind that isn’t “chewing” on thoughts incessantly. From a diet standpoint, you can choose to only buy your produce organic or even better, local and organic. In addition, eating energetically according to season can be something to explore. “Healing with Whole Foods” by Paul Pitchford can be a great resource. One might consider connecting with the breath as a daily morning routine – this can easily be done through activities such as meditation, qigong, yoga, or simply going for a brisk walk.

Motivation can be a tough one, we’ve all been there! In my experience, the more you can listen to your body and cultivate awareness, the better you begin to feel about healthy changes. Massage can be a wonderful tool to help you ground and come home to your body, heightening your ability to hear the messages it has for you. Often times, we don’t realize when we hold tension in particular areas, or how good a little soreness in the tissue after an awesome workout, can actually feel! Even a massage once a month helps to establish a relationship with your body and creates motivation in itself to want to care for this physical gift we’ve been given.

A fun little exercise I got from Courtney Putnam of Rising Bird Healing Arts, is to create a close bond with your body by giving your different body parts characters and personalities. Do you have the shoulders of a nervous teenager? The ankles of a curmudgeonly old man? A shy neck, excited quads? Try it! What personality does your abdomen have?!

Cranio-Sacral

Yes! There are almost too many to choose from, but I'll keep it simple. If I had to suggest two things to you to start today on your road to health, they would be 1) drinking water throughout the day, and 2) relaxed breathing. These are two things that you already do to some degree in your daily life and they require little to no additional money.

A good rule of thumb for drinking water is to consume half of your weight in ounces, daily. So if you weigh 100 pounds, drink at least 50 ounces and if you weigh 200 pounds, make that closer to 100 ounces. This is a general guideline, but very helpful to start out with. If you have access to filtered water, that's wonderful, but if you don't I'd personally choose tap over plastic bottled water these days.

A very basic breathing tutorial: sit comfortably and take full, relaxed breaths in and out. Feel your diaphragm expand with the inhale and contract with the exhale. Rest your hands around the lower portion of your ribcage (where your diaphragm is located) to feel this movement. Do this to start for 5 to 10 minutes each day and work up from there. Remember, this is your time to relax and just enjoy breathing! Like I said, this is very basic, so please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions.

Aromatherapy

There are some very easy ways to start incorporating Essential Oils into your daily wellness regimen. I encourage you to get to know 5-10 essential oils very well at first. Find out what their names are, what they can do for you. Take an introductory class on Aromatherapy: (www.learnatsouth.org, click "aromatherapy", or www.theida.com) and then decide what your needs are based on what essential oils can do for the body. For instance, if you are working on your body weight, peppermint is a great oil to help motivate you to exercise (includes moving and playing!), Cypress is a great immune support oil (utilize in an aromatic bath a day for longevity). I am in the process of creating a line of essential oil synergy solutions. Until then, contact me and I will match you up with essential oils for your wellness regimen.

Negative thoughts attract toxins – Like energies attract. If we could be conscious of every negative thought that we had we would be very healthy. After every session with a client, where we have “changed their mind”, toxins will be released from the body. It works the other way as well, lots of antioxidants, that release toxins will help release negative thinking. Using both techniques is the best for clear, aware, daily simple living

Clients and I have experienced a positive improvement with toxin release: Glutathione, Zeolite, and the Ionic Foot Bath, all help with helping toxins move out of the body.

Mental issues about release will also relate to the Gall Bladder and Liver in disseminating on what to let into the body. The Bladder will have issues on what to let go. The two together may have trouble working together if they are overloaded with toxins. Introducing antioxidants and cell wall pliability will help these two organs to work together.

Cold and Flu Prevention, Naturally

Question: I seem to get every cold and flu that comes around. I don't want to get a flu shot, what are some other holistic options to stay healthy?

Suggestions:

Massage Therapy

It is said that a 60 minute massage session is equivalent to a 20 minute brisk walk. With consistency, circulation, immune function and muscle tone are significantly improved. This can have a great and lasting effect on your body through this 5th season- known as the cold and flu season. Another important aspect is to make it a goal to drink more water than you normally would; at least half of your body weight in ounces. This will help considerably in flushing out bugs and germs that may sneak into your system. Additionally, bodywork helps induce more sound sleeping patterns, better focus and increased body awareness, all aiding in keeping you healthy and vital!
From a reflexology perspective, there are pressure points on the hands and feet that directly relate to immune organs. Addressing these areas can also be a wonderfully effective way to support immunity when your body may be compromised.

Aromatherapy

The most important thing to staying healthy is wanting to be healthy! So, take time for yourself and do the things you need to do to make yourself happy and balanced. Then, focus on building your immune system. Utilize essential oils that support your immune system and clean the air you breathe. The oils that are great for these purposes are: Frankincense, Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Cypress and Lemongrass. To get the right balance, start small and you can always dilute with a carrier oil such as Jojoba or Almond. I would recommend an aromatic bath every other day throughout cold season. Throughout the day, apply the oil to your chest and your hands followed by deep nasal inhalations, to absorb the oils into your lungs and chest where many colds originate. If you're concerned with the "aroma" of the oils, simply keep the oil to yourself by applying to the bottoms of the feet only.

On the energetic level getting sick a lot involves your immunes system which is all about protection and boundaries. To balance this energy it involves not giving away an excess of your energy and standing up for yourself. Be very aware or what you can give away, just because someone asks you to do something doesn’t mean you have to do it. Holding this energy will strengthen your immune system. If you do get sick, check yourself in the last few days, “Did you sell yourself out in anyway?” As a Medical Intuitive I can help identify specifically where and how one does this to themselves.
If one is having trouble with getting sick frequently their immune system is very compromised. We live in an extremely toxic environment which calls for an extreme solution; The Ionic Foot Bath. The Ionic Foot Bath is a dextoxing machine that pulls out mold, chemicals, allergens, metal, and anything inorganic. Our livers and kidneys are filters of the body if they become too flooded with toxins they will not be able to protect the body, especially in a time when it is the cold and flu season. Getting a Ionic Footbath helps support the immune systems so you can take on more and feel better.

Staying healthy is easy with herbal Tinctures! This winter I have managed to avoid all colds and flu bugs by taking Herbs in Tincture form. Tinctures are potent extracts of herbs made easy to use in 1-3 ounce dropper bottles. Its important to take them at the first sign of any symptoms. If you want to boost your immune system and kick out those nasty viruses take Olive Leaf extract. It is anti-viral and anti-microbial and works wonders. For avoiding bacterial infection like strep throat I take Usnea which is one of the most potent anti-biotic herbs. Goldenseal is good for nasty colds or sore throats, though it also tastes nasty. I have avoided taking anti-biotics for 15 years by taking these and other herbs. Its important to remember when taking herbs that you need to take a-lot of them in order for them to work so follow the directions on the label. It is also imporant to educate yourself on the length of time it is safe to take each herb. The internet can provide you with great information on any herb. Herbs in tincture form can be purchased at your local health food store. To your Health!

Got stress? Stress is virtually unavoidable in our modern lives and yet it has a profound negative affect on our health. Research has proven that stress plays a significant role in suppressing our immune systems, making us susceptible to all kinds of maladies, including the common cold and flu. But we can't just toss out everything in our lives that cause us stress. So, what do we do?

Finding tools that help us relax and cope with stress are essential. Craniosacral therapy is one of these tools. It is extremely effective at inducing a sense of peace and relaxation because it works directly to increase the health of the central nervous system and release any tension within it. Regular treatments can help restore a level of calm in our lives and allow us to deal with stress more effectively. Many of my clients report that they sleep better, have more energy, and feel less burdened by life from our work together. That sounds like a recipe for health!

How and when should one use alternative health services?

Guinevere Amadeo, LMP.
Licensed Massage Practitioner, Reflexologist

The answer to this inquiry completely depends on your goals and availability to maintain a self-care regiment. Working in the chiropractic office, I often see clients for a 60 minute bodywork session one to two times per week, for a duration of six weeks to begin with. This program is extremely beneficial to complement chiropractic treatment, address specific trigger points and bring the body back into a state of balance after chronic and acute injury. For other modalities of massage, my recommendations vary with the individuals needs. For maternal massage, I suggest a minimum of a 60-90 minute session every 3-4 weeks through the duration of the pregnancy and three months following. With the drastic physical changes that are taking place in the body, it is essential to release the over-worked and fatigued muscles and joints. And with periodic wellness massage, I encourage my clients to listen to their bodies for an indication of when it's time to schedule our next appointment. Generally, once a month is a good consistency to keep your body, mind and spirit in a healthy balance.

Seeing an Aromatherapist is particularly helpful when you are feeling sick, are in transition, have experienced trauma, or need to commit to new goals – some may need one visit per month, and for others, just a few times a year. When you're feeling sick or unhealthy, essential oils can help you regain a state of good health so that your immune system is functioning at its highest level. Aromatherapy is effective when you are in a state of transition such as moving, changing jobs or leaving a relationship because essentials oils can help you embrace the change and go with the flow. Aromatherapy is effective for post-trauma healing especially in conjunction with post-accident physical therapy or chiropractic work as essentials oils can help the body heal emotionally allowing for greater physical healing.

A Medical Intuitive Session is best at least once a month for ongoing treatment.Twice a month is good for those that really want to get to the issue..
In regards to massage, it all depends on the nature of your injury or the state of health you would like to maintain.
Once a month…is for those who like to prevent injuries and maintain current health.
Twice a month…is for those who want to catch up to chronic pain and take care of old or new occurring injuries.
Four times a month…is for those who are in the middle of injury treatment and have constant pain.
Eight times a month…is for those that are in a debilitating injury and are in severe pain.
***This of course is merely a suggestion and appropriate consultation with your medical professional is recommended.

This depends heavily on what you are seeking treatment for in the first place. Many people these days receive massage and craniosacral therapy to help alleviate daily aches, tension, and stress, while increasing relaxation and general wellness. For these clients I recommend 2-3 sessions for the first month and then to 1-2 sessions per month after that. It's generally beneficial to ramp up in the beginning as your body adjusts to the new therapy. After this initial exposure, many people like to settle into a groove of monthly appointments. That is what fits their pocket books and their calendars while still allowing them to feel an improvement in their quality of life from the work we're doing together.

However, if you're seeking treatment for a recent injury or trauma, beginning with a routine of 1-2 sessions a week will help minimize recovery time and maximize healing potential. In this case, it can also be beneficial to have a diagnosing physician supervise your treatment plan and help you make these important decisions.

Life is all about balance. First, examine the things in your life that may need to be put on the back burner. Many of us have a tendency to over-commit ourselves and in doing so, wind up not completing any of the tasks to the best of our abilities. Figure out some ways to use your time more efficiently. Set aside a specific scheduled time for certain tasks and take appropriate breaks to breathe, stretch and be present in your body. Drink plenty of water and make it a priority to get adequate sleep. Massage is a wonderful way to center and ground our minds and use the precious time we do have more effectively. By increasing your circulation and de-stressing your muscles, you are boosting you immune system and helping your body to stay healthy during the busyness of life. Bodywork can also be very stimulating, and helpful in focusing your mind and energy.

Being an Aquarius I can relate to this one, rest is the key, running around a lot can cause a lot of stress on your adrenals. Taking time to rest and receive a massage can rejuvenate yourself to take on more. Even God rested on the 7th day. Something I have noticed with people who do the-run-around-thing a lot is that their Strength Chakra or Solar Plexus is running to high. A common trait with these people is that they think it is all up to them and they have to do it because no one else can. With every issue there is a Chakra that is too high and a Chakra that is too low. Most of the time the Heart Chakra is too low. The Heart is about expressing your vulnerability and asking for what you need.
So if no one can hear what you want, then it will be up to you to do everything yourself. So to balance this scenario, Ask for help!.
In the end you will have more people around you to help you with what you need and as a result you will run around less and have more energy at the end of the day.

People who are stressed out and tired can benefit from dietary changes like replacing coffee with green tea, cutting out sugars and processed carbohydrates and taking a super food supplement like Spirulina. Taking even five minutes through out the day to meditate, do a few chants and affirmations can keep us more balanced, focused and relaxed. For example I use my driving time to chant Om Mani Padme Hum, a Buddhist chant which dispels negativity and purifies the emotional body. In only a few minutes I feel calm and balanced.

There are many layers to your current emotional state. Though I would want to know more background about what is causing your fatigue, I can generally suggest a few good tips regarding business, the holidays and our current lack of sun.
First, take a step back from your task list, and meditate each morning on what your priorities are for the day. You probably can’t get everything done right now especially with the holidays fast approaching. However, when you decide what’s important and how you want to both share and receive joy this season, you will feel like your heart is in the right place and that the things you do accomplish are the things that are meant to be accomplished. Essential Oils that will help you focus on your purpose and priorities are oils that are also good for the Heart Chakra (help you express your compassion and focus on your self-worth) - Geranium, Ylang Ylang, Lavender and Grapefruit and for the Root Chakra (help you feel more grounded and not as spread thin) - Myrrh, Red Thyme, Ginger and Vetivert.
Second, in terms of energy, the fall season is the season that Pacific Northwesterners start to feel sad about the departure of the sun. By the winter, you may become more acclimated, but in the meantime, I’m really enjoying my Vitamin D supplements! In terms of essential oils, the following are known for their anti-depressant, energizing qualities: Lemongrass, Lime, Grapefruit, Mandarin, Sweet Orange and Lemon.
I would suggest combining as many of these oils as you feel you need in one bottle and use this on your Heart Chakra during your morning meditation - this will set your intention for the day. By focusing on your priorities, being more grounded, and getting some sun-replacement support, hopefully you will feel more energized throughout the day and content with your accomplishments!
You can get your essential oils from any Health Food Store or from Solace Essentials.

Developing a healthy and balanced exercise program to promote body awareness and vitality may include stretching, meditative exercises to increase chi, and simple breathing techniques.

The Zen of Healing

First and foremost… water, water, water! It’s a bit of a running joke with my patients. But it is truly amazing what a difference drinking the right amount of water each day (around half your body weight in ounces) can make a difference in all aspects of your health, including energy. It is one of the five-elements that makes up all things, how could getting adequate amounts of this fundamental substance not have significant effects?!

The second question I ask is, “are you getting enough exercise?” Exercise, while taking energy to do, actually can provide consistent long-term energy when done on a regular basis. Busy or not, making the time is a must!

I know the Seattle readers are going to scoff at this next point – put down the coffee (soda too)! Energetically speaking, coffee (decaf or not) is initially heating but its long-term effect is cooling, slowing us down over time. In addition, it depletes our storehouse of inherited Qi (or Essence) which is very difficult to replenish again. For more information on our Essence, refer to my recent blog post (http://thezenofhealing.com/2009/01/28/the-essence-of-water/). I’m not saying everyone should eliminate coffee, overall constitution plays a factor as well. But it should be something to consider if energy levels are low.

Also looking at your dairy and gluten intake is worth looking at, both of which create an environment of what Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) refers to as “dampness” in our meridians. Dampness can cause low energy levels, pain, mental sluggishness, etc.

Acupuncture is a wonderful way to raise energy levels and is the most common “side-effect” I hear from people’s treatment regardless of what their actual reason for coming in is. Various deficient and excess conditions from either a TCM or Five Element acupuncture perspective see fatigue as a common symptom and can be reconciled through acupuncture.
